Your first couture consultation, explained

The first consultation is where a commission either begins or doesn’t — and it is far calmer than most people expect. Here is exactly what happens, and how to make the most of it.

A private couture consultation at the HANIYE atelier in Dubai

It is a conversation, not a sales floor

The first visit is private, unhurried and by appointment — one client at a time, at the villa atelier in Al Quoz. Its purpose is understanding, not selling. The atelier wants to know the occasion, the setting, how you want to feel, and what you do and don’t love. You leave with clarity, whether or not you decide to proceed.

There is no obligation to proceed. There is an expectation of seriousness.

What to bring

  • Your occasion and date — the single most useful thing to arrive with.
  • References — images of gowns, details, colours or moods you are drawn to (and ones you are not).
  • The setting — where the event is, indoors or out, and the time of year.
  • Shoes or heel height you expect to wear, if you have them in mind.
  • An open mind — the best designs often emerge from the conversation itself.

What gets decided — and what doesn’t

You will explore design direction, silhouette, fabric character and the broad shape of timeline and investment. What is not decided on day one is every final detail — couture develops. Measurements and pattern drafting come once a direction is agreed; the design refines across the fittings that follow.

After the consultation

If you choose to proceed, the commission is reserved, the figure is confirmed in writing, and the work begins. If you would rather think, you simply think — there is no pressure. See how the full journey unfolds on The Couture Process, or request a consultation on By Appointment.

Questions

What happens at a couture consultation?

It is a private, unhurried conversation about your occasion, setting and how you want to feel, exploring design direction, silhouette and fabric. Measurements and pattern drafting follow once a direction is agreed. There is no obligation to proceed.

What should I bring to my first couture appointment?

Your occasion and date, reference images of looks and details you love (and dislike), the setting and season, any intended heel height, and an open mind. The most useful thing is simply knowing the event and date.

Will I be measured at the first consultation?

Often the first visit focuses on design direction, with full measurements and pattern drafting once a direction is agreed. The process is designed to develop, not to decide everything at once.

Is there any pressure to commit?

No. A consultation is to explore whether the house is right for you. You are free to take time; there is no obligation to proceed.
